Scripture Reading: Psalm 127:1, 2
This passage is speaking of total dependence upon God. It is great that we as Christians have God to depend on in this life (Heb. 13:5). Verse 2 is speaking of worrying. It is vain and useless to worry and this is not what God wants us to fill our lives with. I read this on the internet a while back on the subject of worry:
“Science estimates that a dense fog seven blocks wide by one hundred feet deep consists of only enough water to fill one eight ounce glass. Think about that…all of a major sized city could be paralyzed by several gallons of water. If a dense fog hangs around very long it can bring on panic…: When the fog of worry descends, keep in mind that the devil only has to use a very little thing to cause a one person size fog. It’s been blown out of proportion for the purpose of stealing your joy…”
I thought that was interesting and it put a different perspective on worrying. Many times the things we worry over never come to pass. And most times worry cannot change the thing we are worrying over. I know that sometimes the things we worry over are not small things, but can really be something of much concern. It is okay to be concerned over important things that arise, but we must learn not to take them to the point of worry. We have to realize that if we belong to God and that is the most important thing, then nothing in this life can take that way from us. Worry for me is really hard and I battle with it a lot. But I have learned that a strong relationship with God helps so much when you find yourself in a situation that you are strongly tempted to worry over. What helps me the most is prayer and getting comfort from the Scriptures. This helps to calm me and keep my mind from imagining everything possible to make worry worse. We read in the book of Matthew of how we are to not get too wrapped up in the concerns of this world to the point of worry, but the keep our minds focused on seeking God’s kingdom first. Mat 6:25 -34 - “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” These are some words that describe worry: to be anxious, feel uneasy, be apprehensive, disturbed, lose heart, be heavy-hearted, be afraid, dread, brood over, stew. It is also defined as torment, agony, misery, woe, difficulty and vexation. On the other hand words that have the opposite meaning of worry, fear, and panic are: Comfort, solace, console, sooth, calm, tranquility, peace of mind, and serenity. All of these can be our when we keep our minds stayed on Him who is the giver of peace (Isa. 26:3).
Psa 127:1 A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
Psa 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
